#10: Weekly Recap: Coachings, Auditions, Show/Song of the Week

7/12/24

Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and (this week) SHOWS!

COACHINGS/SESSIONS:

I was off last weekend so I only had about 20 coachings this week - most of which were my college audition prep students and a few of my retainer clients. A few moments that really stuck out to me:

  • As we talked about a few posts ago - understanding THE OTHER

  • Removing emotion from your acting language. “Well she’s angry” or “she’d frustrated”. Focus less on your interpretation of the characters feelings, and focus on what they are DOING. What is the action? How are they trying to get what they want? Remember, when you are cold, what do you do? You don’t just “be cold”... you try to GET WARM. Once you unlock that for yourself, you will understand acting.

  • ADVOCATING FOR YOURSELF - i worked with someone this week who was being a bit stonewalled by a production team because her show is double cast and there are 2 keys for her big song but the team wanted to “just use one” and for whatever reason chose the other key… the one not AS strong for her. After our chat and I encouraged her to speak up and not settle for that BS, she connected with them and GOT HER KEY! You must must MUST advocate for yourself.

AUDITIONS

I only went to one audition this week which I documented on instagram a bit. It was for Ragtime at NYCC - which is cast but I still wanted to go out for it! I was in the 12:40 group so I got to listen a bit to about 20 singers before me and it was a lot of SLOOOWWWWWWW mega musical ballads. Lots of Hold On & I Don’t Need A Roof. Which are great for the show (maybe not i don’t need a roof TBH, it’s not really all that show-y and Ragtime is huge vocals)... but I could only imagine listening to ballad after ballad all day. I sang a fun uptempo to switch it up a bit and it went really well so i have no regrets!

SHOWS

  • I saw EMPIRE at New World Stages to see 2 of my friends - it was good, a little slow but I liked a lot of the music and the big numbers were very high energy. Go to see it to support new musicals!

  • TOMMY on Broadway at the Nederlander. Got to see Danny Quadrino as TOMMY - a really nice surprise understudy moment! He was amazing. The show was excellent! If you like Tommy, you’ll love it. But if it’s new to you… it may be tough haha. It closes next week so if you want to go… go.

  • GREASE at Centenary Stage Co where I will be teaching in the fall as an adjunct! My friend Nicole is starring as Rizzo so wanted to go support her, plus Grease is always fun. High production value - excellent tech. Runs through next weekend.

SHOW & SONG of the Week - ALICE BY HEART

Ya, I completely forgot about this one. I started it and know I’ll like it, but it also may be something I need to see. I think in August I’ll be able to see a teen production of it so I’ll try to keep familiarizing til then. I’ll try again next week haha.
