#16: It's less of a sail than a climb
Monday 7/22/24
So, it’s looking like I have very few auditions on the books for the next few weeks. Potentially even the entire month of August as I look ahead. And by “very few” I mean “zero” haha! Now, of course that can, and most likely will, change. But it certainly gives me pause to think about how I can treat my life like I DO have auditions.
I try to think this way during slow season. What behaviors and habits do I have when I know I have an audition and how can I sustain some practices during slower periods?
Here are some things I will do during August to stay fresh:
I am not adding any new credits to my resume for a bit (womp), so I will make sure I have 10 headshots & resumes printed and CUT/stapled - ready to go in case a last minute audition comes in. I can be bad about this and then sometimes I scrambling the night before. Check for the paper I like, that my ink is full, and that any resume edits i want to make are done. I updated my resume back in April so I like the look and edits so I simply need to print, cut, and staple.
Update Actors Access resume too. I forget to do this and it looks nothing like my actual resume haha
Use my tracks of my audition cuts to rehearse my book 1x a week. Rehearse for live and video auditions - THESE ARE DIFFERENT!
Rehearse how I review each of my cuts with the accompanist
Go through my closet and check out any new pieces I have purchased - make sure I have some varied looks that are hot weather friendly.
Clean out backpack and refresh audition essentials. Tissues, gum, riccolas, pen, pencil, extra phone charger (just got a new phone with a different chord)
Check all cuts are clean and make any new edits to clean & reduce page count
These are good habits during downtime and also when it’s busy! When in a busy season of auditioning, it can be very easy to forget about other pieces or even get your music crumpled up, or forget to print resumes. Help yourself stay ready. As they say, if you stay ready you don’t have to get ready!
