#45: Weekly Coaching & Audition Recap
Friday 8/30/24
Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and SHOWS I SAW and the show of the month update.
COACHINGS:
I had another busy week - about 40 sessions between college audition prep and coach the coach sessions plus some voice lessons. At this point in my college audition prep sessions, most of my students who began in April/May are in a spot where we are simply running their material and I’m giving notes and we are applying adjustments. We are checking for time, ensuring we know how to answer some of the school video prompt questions. It’s so crazy that in just about a month we will starting filming and then 2-3 weeks later this part of the process is done! It’s really a lot of work for so long and then it abruptly finishes.
AUDITIONS:
I had a self tape audition and a few callbacks. My self tape was a BIG TIME STRUGGLE. Let’s just be real right now. I’ve realized this between my tapes this week and the callbacks. I have completely stopped practicing for callbacks. I’ve gotten so used to winging it. Like, WAY TOO USED TO WINGING IT. I think I know myself and I know that I can learn music quickly and make choices and have strong cold reads. But is it my “best”... questionable. Last night my callback was for a show that I don’t know - at all. No more than i’ve heard some of the music over the last 20 years but couldn’t tell you the plot, hum a tune, nothing. I’ve known about this callback for about a month… I never downloaded the recording. I didn’t watch any clips. I just discarded it completely. Then this past week when we got the “be familiar with XYZ” email I simply didn’t do it lol. I downloaded the recording before my 1 hour drive and threw the 3 songs onto a playlist and tried to capture the lyrics as i was driving. But i did not know it. I knew it enough. Anyway, I have to stop that. And if you do that… you need to stop too. Let’s get better together. Now, if i get it, that will be hysterical.
SHOWS I SAW:
Oooops. None. Saw no shows :( don’t worry, this will pick up soon.
SHOW OF THE MONTH (THE CONNECTOR):
I don’t know if you will be able to watch this but if not just watch “The Whole World Changed” on youtube. It’s Hannah Cruz who has been in a few NYC shows and some tours like Hamilton. But, if you are an elder millennial you may remember her as the high school Mama Rose - she had a viral video of her singing Rose’s Turn and it was a cultural shift lol. No, but seriously she’s great and sounds amazing on this recording. The whole recording is on youtube as well - it is SOOOO JRB. The intervals, the crazy piano. But it also sounds Jonathan Larson-esque. I didn’t see this show but it sounds SO 90s.
