#70: Weekly Coaching & Audition Recap

BLOG 70

Friday 10/4/24

Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and SHOWS I SAW and the show of the month update. Today, there’s an extra little treat at the end.

COACHINGS

“What you are great at NOW”. This is the difference between audition coaches and those who are working on your development long term. A voice teacher, perhaps, has been working with you for a year and has a plan for you the next 3, 6, or even 12 months. THAT IS DIFFERENT than auditioning with material that suits your ability now. This is why, sometimes, a voice or acting teacher/coach may not be able to separate the two. Make sure you can.

College auditions particularly are about potential. But you have to still show your strengths. If you have a weak, or no, headvoice… then don’t showcase it simply because it’s “getting better” with your voice teacher. Don’t do a Shakespeare monologue because your acting coach wants you to have one - unless there is proficiency, it’s a no.

AUDITIONS

Welp… haha. I don’t think I got the job where I was up for a role against 2 pretty notable Broadway actors - one of whom played the role on broadway. I did go to another audition for the same show more locally, and even though they stated they had AEA contracts in the posting, they told me they weren’t/couldn’t/whatever use any. Which was disappointing but my audition was great. I’ve been auditioning a lot more in my head voice which is strange. But in some rooms the acoustics really carry especially on my notes over a G. So even though these last few haven’t resulted in a job, it’s ok. I’m being more selective about what i attend and that comes with a lower amount of options and, as a result, jobs. Also, WTF am i thinking trying to add to my plate in the month of OCTOBER! Julie, get it together haha.

SHOWS I SAW

I saw ALICE BY HEART! I can’t believe how this all aligned since week ONE of this blog. So, now I get why it was hard to listen to it and why I struggled. It’s a show you must see. I don’t think I’ll ever go out of my way to listen to it again. But I would see another production. I liked that it was short and art-sy. But I guess the last time I watched anything Alice in Wonderland related was when I was a child and did not understand that the plot is literally about doing drugs haha. The next few weeks I’m seeing Parade (again to see my other student who is double cast), Jesus Christ Superstar, James and the Giant Peach (never saw it!), and then The Music Man!

GAVIN CREEL

A lot of people are completely torn up about the passing of Gavin. Theatre is such a personal thing. Whether you knew him, knew OF him, or simply saw him in shows… it’s personal. His voice is part of the fabric of contemporary musical theatre and will be studied in musical theatre history books. He was an idol to many. There are so many incredible performances to pick from, so I’ll just share my personal favorite. This song was from a Peter Pan musical by Pasek & Paul that never saw the light of day and I believe this is one of the only songs to have a performance captured. Of course, others have sang it, but he was the first. I love Peter Pan stories and especially love the idea that we can all fly with a wonderful thought and pixie dust (aka a little help from our friends). Here is one of my wonderful thoughts: Gavin Creel sings Pasek & Paul's "Do You Remember?"
