#50: Weekly Coaching & Audition Recap
Friday 9/6/24
Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and SHOWS I SAW and the show of the month update. ALSO….
I’m gonna take 2 seconds to CELEBRATE that this is blog post number FIFTY! If you know me, you know I struggle with following through on long term ideas/goals/projects or even things like not feeling the need to move every year. The fact that I’ve done this 50 times without missing or delaying an entry REALLY means I like doing it. Thanks for being here. Hopefully you are getting some tips or simply enjoying some daily theatre reading!
COACHINGS:
I had a super packed week and now that I’m teaching voice at Centenary it’s a nice break in the week to get away from my computer. Tuesday was a crazy day - I coached from 10am-10pm with one break somewhere midday. I have to keep my eye on the prize - in about 6 weeks, all my college prep prescreen coachings and filming will be OVER. One particular coaching this week had a large AHA moment. She was singing a very “mega musical” Wildhorn ballad. A BEAUTIFUL ballad called Never Say Goodbye. It is full of all the juicy Wildhorn melodies and soaring vocals. However, the song lacks meaning. Honestly, you could pick that song up and plop it into literally any other show. Very “Someone Like You” or “This Is The Moment” coded. It’s so hard in songs like this to find meaning and objective because they are SO DAMN JUICY to sing. But often times it then lacks objective. We pivoted the thought to be from a soaring love song to a song that is making a demand of the other.
Lyrics:
How you haunt my dreams?
Even now, I can feel you.
In my mind it seems you are near, you are really here.
Every night it′s just the same, I see your face.
Every time I close my eyes, I hear you whispering my name.
If it's a fantasy, then, let it be.
Never say goodbye.
Never leave me, stay forever.
I can live without the days.
Just find me in the night.
Just say you′ll never leave my dreams,
never say goodbye.
So many secrets you've never shared,
secrets I must forgive.
If I doubted you cared,
I doubt I'd live.
Never say goodbye.
Never leave me, stay forever.
Be my angel in the night.
Don′t let the memory die.
Just say you′ll never leave my dreams,
never say goodbye.
I’m sure you can even HEAR this melody even if you haven’t heard it lol. I’ve talked about this before: OPPOSITES. If the music is soaring and thrilling - find the dark. Find the demand.
AUDITIONS:
No auditions this week but I have received 2 exciting callbacks. I’ll be in for a new musical with an audition due Monday. And then on 9/19 I have a VERY exciting callback. Outside of Broadway, it’s the biggest theatre/contract I’ve ever been up for! I’ve done the role before - so hopefully that gives me a bit of an edge. It would be a christmas show on the west coast! More to come (ideally)!
SHOWS I SAW:
Ok, so I didn’t see any shows BUT it was Monthly Musicals presents A Chorus Line! This year at Monthly we did “a year of revivals” so all the shows are shows we’ve done in the last 11 years. We had about 50 people between the actors and the band. Gonzo put together like 25 pieces… it was CRAZY. I LOVE A Chorus Line so much. At times its a bit book heavy for me but i still love it!
SHOW OF THE MONTH:
I’m officially done with THE CONNECTOR by JRB. What were your thoughts? If you want to share send me a DM in IG, or text me if we know each other haha. I had a really good time working through it and I simply love hearing Hannah Cruz wail on these songs. My favorite part, aside from the music, was watching JRB explain adding the “robert” back into his name in high school lol - i stumbled across that video while looking up the show. Also, we wrote SFANW at 24? Ok. He wrote SFANW and L5Y both before he was 30. That’s WILD. Anyway, always something to learn.
