#55: Weekly Coaching & Audition Recap
Friday 9/13/24
Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and SHOWS I SAW and the show of the month update.
COACHINGS:
I AM SO THRILLED FOR THIS DAY OFF. I’m actually off til Monday because I’m currently in the Catskills for a big wedding weekend! It has been a VERY intense few weeks for coaching as I’m sure you’ve gathered. The last 6 days have been pretty much 10-10 with 1 or 2 exceptions. It’s actually to the point where I need to figure out a different way to manage this process moving forward. Do I need to get another hand? Or take less students? I don’t know what the future looks like but it needs a little revamp!
I had some good discoveries with clients. One that comes to mind was working through transitions. I don’t recall doing this in my training so I’m going with the idea that it is JGC copyrighted lol. She was having a tough time connected two sentences together with how the THOUGHT from 1 sentence to another connected. It seemed disconnected to each other. The next sentence came out of nowhere. So, we tried attaching the two sentences in extra slow-mo and IT WORKED SO WELL. Due to the speed, she was forced to use her face to connect the ideas. Acting is difficult to write a blog about but you’ll just have to hear me on this. Honestly try this. Take a song that you sing all the time - and sing it at half the tempo. You’ll have to use the silence between phrases more intentionally!
AUDITIONS:
I spoke about this not long ago. I am the queen of winging it. And sadly, i’m very good at it. I had callback material for a new musical for over 2 weeks and the tape was due this past Monday at 5pm. I had a packed day Monday so you would think that I would’ve planned to learn the songs and do the tape in advance. Nope. I learned the songs at 8am, started taping at 9am - was done taping by 9:30/9:40, and edited til 10:15. I started work at 11.
This is NOT IMPRESSIVE lol. This is a problem. I know that I can learn things quickly - especially new music. I have a whole system which includes being offbook for at least the 1st half of the piece. I have to stop doing this. But the biggest problem is that the tape came out really solid. I was connected, mostly offbook, and overall it was good. BUT it could have been GREAT if i put work in in advance. Anyway, don’t be like me. OH and I have a fun one next week - PLEASE CROSS YOUR FINGERS THURSDAY!
SHOWS I SAW:
None… they are coming i promise.
SHOW OF THE MONTH:
Ok our journey with THE CONNECTOR comes to an end. There is a lot of great material in this show and I loved listening to it and getting familiar. It’s SOOOOOO JRB and if you didn’t go on this journey with me. You should! UP NEXT: RIDE THE CYCLONE. This is a show that the under 25 crew LOVES. So, I need to really get to know her well. The limited knowledge I have of the story and score seem very cool - so i’m ready to dive in!
