#61: Practicing Dreams

Monday 9/23/24

For a while, the idea of little wins has been on my mind. I have a tough time celebrating things for myself that are exciting. I am so focused on celebrating BIG things - a new job for example. We could all use some celebrating of the little wins so here are some for me and for my students the past few days.

  • A director who I auditioned for headed to the bathroom about 15 minutes after my audition and I was sitting on my computer at a table. On her way past me headed back to the room she said “hey great job today. Really great.”. Now usually i’d ignore it like “oh she was just being nice and not making it weird” but how about “she could’ve said NOTHING or thanks for coming in”. Maybe appreciate that you actually DID do a “great job”. I can detach that sentiment from the outcome which - who knows - but I can be happy with that response.

  • One of my college prep students took every adjustment I gave them last week and applied to to their work this week - they came to the party READY and it proves that they can learn a technique and then apply it to any piece.

  • I had a great conversation with a friend about shifting their focus from an interpretation of a character that didn’t give purpose to a new interpretation that IS based on action and purpose. That’s a win for both of us.

  • I met someone in person i’ve been theatre-tiktok friends with, and we even were zoom colleagues, for a while.

  • One of my students sang the National Anthem at an event and was struggling to find the correct first pitch on her own but I got a video and she KILLED it.

  • I submitted a great self tape only for 3 days later to see an announcement that the role was cast with someone who was in the OG company of one of my fave shows of all time. I don’t want to disclose the show/audition so i’ll leave it at that. Now, how is that a win? Well, it isn’t. But, with all these actors with broadway credits doing small regional work or concerts, it means something to me to be in the running “against” them. And in a year when I talk about it, I’ll have a pretty cool story

  • I sang my favorite sondheim song in a cute little miscast cabaret.

What was a little win for you in the theatre world this week?
