#75: Weekly Coaching & Audition Recap
Friday 10/11/24
Welcome to FRIDAY! Another weekly recap of coachings, auditions, and SHOWS I SAW and the show of the month update.
COACHINGS
This week was such a fun coaching week because I am filming SO MANY students this Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon and that means I had a “final” meeting with each of them prior to filming! These are my favorite sessions because they perform all of their pieces for me, I go off camera so I can take notes, and then once everything is done, we review and I give them some things to think about for the next few days. They ALWAYS bring it! It’s amazing because most students I’ve worked with since APRIL so it’s so incredible to get to this exciting point in the college audition process. I’m very much a “work til it’s over” kind of coach - I’m happy to share specifics about things that are going well and why, and even if I think it all went well, I’ll give them 1-2 things to consider or try to make sure we do not get stuck in a certain portrayal. We need to be certain and specific when filming, but also be free and open to new things.
AUDITIONS
Boo. I had none. Again. However, MTI just acquired the rights to Kimberly Akimbo so once the tour closes YOU CAN HIRE ME FOR THAT. I’ll be prepping the role NOW for any potential auditions that come my way :)
SHOWS I SAW
Ok, so since we last chatted - I saw Parade 2x at the same theatre lol. Ahhh, the joys of being a voice coach with students who all live in a 10 mile radius! 2 of my students were double cast in the same role, so I went to see each of them. It doesn’t hurt that I do love Parade and always am happy to support my students. I did tell them both to audition and helped them both WITH their auditions, so really it was my own fault lol. Parade is chock full of incredible music - so much that is great for auditions. I know a lot of people like to sing Hard To Speak My Heart, but to me it’s just too intense. He’s literally speaking at his own trial about allegations of murder and child abuse so, it’s just a bit… much for an audition.
SHOW OF THE MONTH
Time for a new show of the month! I think I had my fill of Ride The Cyclone. We are going a bit more on the nose for the next few weeks - Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812. Or, is it simply called Great Comet now? I guess I’ll find out! I’ve never seen it and only have heard the opening, No One Else, and Dust and Ashes. Funny story - if you are my friend/student, text me that you saw this and I’ll tell you how I was almost in the first ever reading of this musical but went to Burger King instead.
