#76: They Ran Out of Money…

Monday 10/14/24

OH MY WHAT A WEEKEND. I filmed 9 students Fri-Sun and today another 4 (off from school for Columbus Day). I don’t have a final total yet, but the total edited/organized videos should be about 150 individual videos. My editing is fancy, but it is time consuming. For dance I have to overlay audio, for ballet I have to string 4 videos together/make sure it’s under 30 secs/overlay audio, they each usually have 1-2 questions or a wildcard to film, songs and monologues get a “full” take and then I usually have to edit to a crop or a certain time limit for all 4 pieces. Then they get all their edits into a dropbox already labeled and ready for them to upload to the various platforms. I would estimate this WHOLE process of editing/organizing per student is 1.5- 2 hours. If I have 13 students filmed the last 4 days, you can do the math. And if you can’t, it’s 20-26 hours for just those students. Somehow, I have to do this 20-26 hours (a part time job) in addition to my 50 hours of other work this week! It’s ok, it’s ok. It’s only like this for a month a year. I can get through it!

I’ll share this here first. So, yay! You get insider info.

I’m looking for my own space. I’d like a space that can have a small room I can turn into a dance room, maybe a 2nd room for voice/small coachings/self tapes. If there is a little area for an office that would also be nice. I’m thinking some kind of nail salon type space. I think having a little space for my own would be great for many reasons. If I owned a home, perhaps I’d build this. I’ve thought about renting another apartment but it’s the noise I’m concerned about.

The spaces I use heavily in October are a run done studio in Montclair and a nice dance studio in Oakland. They both charge me a good rate so that makes it really hard to give up and I can pretty much get in there any time I need, and have my own access. But, I think I want to just have my own space. It’s a business expense, but of course, that doesn't mean it is free. I can’t imagine spending 20-30K on a space annually but if I want to grow my business, it may be unavoidable.

Anyway, that’s where my brain is at. It always happens this time of year haha. BUT, if I made it a goal for all of next year, then it may be doable. The problem is I only start looking in September and then give up. So, we’ll see! If you know of any spaces send them my way!
